SCEC: A Brief History / Who We Are
SCEC is a unique free-standing, accredited ACPE Center formed in 2002, providing Clinical Pastoral Education and other spiritual services, incorporated as a non-profit organization. It is dedicated to serve the northwestern and northern areas of Ohio, as well as the southeastern Michigan area.
The Center operates on a contract basis, offering Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students or residents to train within various institutions -- supplementing current spiritual services in those settings -- or providing such services if an institution has no such service in place.
SCEC currently is fully accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), a nationally-established accrediting agency for CPE, recognized itself by the United States Department of Education. The Center provides accredited ACPE CPE units to all students contingent on completing the unit's requirements.
Spearheading this Center are two ACPE Supervisors (teaching chaplains) who jointly claim an impressive number of years' experience in teaching Clinical Pastoral Education. They are an eclectic pair, sharing a variety of strengths in Family Systems, Gestalt, Myers/Briggs, spiritual assessment, and pastoral counseling.
Each of the Supervisors has served as a congregational pastor and come from Evangelical Lutheran and Presbyterian USA affiliations. The Center, however, is committed to multi-faith service -- Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, and others -- and looks toward fulfilling that commitment in its day-to-day operations.
A community based Board of Directors guides the mission of the Center and serves as the Professional Advisory Group. Representatives of all institutions with which the Center has contracts, as well as other professionals are encouraged to participate. The Board is dedicated to both evaluation and accountability for the Center's activity so that the programs of SCEC will remain professional and responsive.
